Summer Readin’

Summer to me means reading! As a child, I would read a lot during the summers (yeah, I was that kid…), then once I went to college I would take about a week off of reading—as a journalism major I read a lot in school—then I would jump into the chick lit. Call it what you will but sometimes you just need to be entertained, my friend calls books like these “brain candy,” I love it!

There are so many amazing books out there, and I just can’t wait to get started. Here are a few of my planned summer reads:

A heartbroken woman stumbled upon a diary and steps into the life of its anonymous author. In her twenties, Emily Wilson was on top of the world: she had a bestselling novel, a husband plucked from the pages of GQ, and a one-way ticket to happily ever after. (from Goodreads)

I’m a huge fan of Sarah’s blog over on Glamour.com, so when she started talking about her novel, it was immediately on my list. From what I have heard and read about this book, it seems to have everything I want in a summer read, it wraps you up and takes you to another time. I can hardly wait!

This book, which comes out August 23 (right before my birthday, it’s like a present just for me!), is the newest edition to the Temperance Brennan series. The TV show Bones is loosely based on the characters and stories, and the books are SO GOOD. I started reading the series about a year ago, and I can read one in a weekend, no problemo. They are entertaining, the characters are well thought out, and I just love a good mystery. I also really like the Temperance character, and the science in the books. I cannot WAIT until the next one is out, I am seriously going through withdrawals having to wait for this book.

When she is not waitressing or preoccupied with her own amorous adventures, telepath Sookie Stackhouse is tracking down a serial killer. Her sleuthing is partly altruistic, but she’s also trying to save her brother, Jason, who has become the chief suspect in the crime. (from Goodreads)

OK, don’t judge. Think what you will about the current vampire trend (especially YA lit) but can I just say, it’s entertaining!? Yes, some are a bit over the top—I am looking at you Vampire Diaries, the books not the show—but they are fun. I’ve read the first four books in this series and I just want to read more. I love reading books that are also movies or TV shows, I love knowing what’s going on, it makes me feel special. I think I am going to wait to post a review on these until I finish the series, but that may change, depending on my mood.

Nonfiction Reads

I was a nonfiction editor for two years so it’s been a while since I read a nonfiction book for pleasure, but I think after three months away from that industry, I am ready to start back into it. Here is one book on my summer nonfiction reading list:

I always get a little frustrated while thinking about what to read next, there are just so many books I want to read. What’s on your summer reading list? What is your favorite type of book to read?
